第12回「日米国際シンポジウム」参加のご報告

拝啓 師走の候、時下ますますご清祥のこととお慶び申し上げます。
平素は格別のご高配を賜り、厚く御礼申し上げます。
このたび、2020年12月9日開催の「日米国際シンポジウム」に参加いたしましたので、ご報告申し上げます。「日米国際シンポジウム」は、日本、米国の日米協会会員が一同に会する機会として、1995年ハワイ州ホノルルにて初開催されました。今回で第12回目となり、当初はフィラデルフィアにて開催予定でしたが、コロナ禍の為、オンラインでの開催となり、アメリカから28協会、日本から9協会、計63名の参加となりました。
全米日米協会連合理事長Peter Kelley氏のご挨拶を皮切りに各協会代表者からのご挨拶がありました。各協会の活動も紹介され、今年は中止となりましたが、ワシントン日米協会では、「さくら祭り」を開催したり、フロリダ日米協会では「七夕祭り」を開催したりと、改めて日米の親睦の深さを実感することができました。本年は、どこの協会もコロナ禍の影響で、大阪日米協会と同様、イベント開催の自粛や総会決議事項の書面回答などの使用を余儀なくされ、今までとは違う初めての対応に困惑しましたが、コロナ禍は新しい活動方法を探り、コロナ禍を越えて再度活性化して行くチャンスとも考えられます。他の協会では今後、オンラインでのジャズ音楽会や、日本建築である松風荘のバーチャルツアーなど、コロナ禍でも会員様が楽しめる工夫をしてゆくということでした。コロナ禍で大変な部分も多くありますが、悪い面ばかりではなく、オンラインでのイベントや会議が活発になった事により、人々の関係がより親密になったり、直接会えない遠方の方々や身体の不自由な方々ともオンラインを通して気軽に会話ができたりと、多くの参加者が良い面にも目を向けられていたのが印象的でした。
また、国際シンポジウムは2年毎に日米交互に開催されており、来る2022年には京都で開催予定です。2年後の京都では、現地での集会とオンラインでの開催など、より多くの日米両国の会員が自身のライフスタイルに合わせて参加できるよう、新しい形での参加方法を模索し、日米両国民の友好な関係がより深くはかれることを楽しみにしております。

The report of “the 12th International Japan-America Societies Symposium”
We hope this message finds you well. Thank you very much for your continued support of JASO.
I attended the 12th International Japan-America Societies Symposium in December 9th, 2020. “International Japan-America Societies Symposium” was firstly held in Honolulu, State of Hawaii in 1995 so that AJS members got together from Japan and America.
The 12th Symposium was planned to be held in Philadelphia, but it was changed into online because of Covid-19. 28 societies from America and 9 societies from Japan, so 63 people attended in total.

Mr. Peter Kelly greeted first and representatives of each society followed him. In the greetings, some activities were introduced. For example, Washington society holds “Cherry Blossom Festival” and Florida society holds “Tanabata Festival”. Because of Covid-19, those activities were cancelled this year, but we realized again how deep the friendship between Japan and America would be.
This year, every society was forced to refrain from holding events and to conduct resolution in writing about general meeting, so we confused unusual situation. However, we think Covid-19 makes new way of activities and revitalizes our society. Other societies said they would hold online jazz festival and virtual tour of Japanese architecture, Shofuso to make members happy even in the pandemic of Covid-19.
In the symposium, many attendees tried to see bright sides of Covid-19. For instance, online events and meetings made people’s relationships more intimate and it’s easier to communicate with people who live in far places and have disabilities via online tools.
International Symposium is alternately held once in 2 years in Japan and America and next one will be held in Kyoto in 2022. In the next symposium, we will look for new way of attendance, depending on each life styles. We are looking forward to meeting more members from Japan and America and to making our friendship deeper.

「新年パーティ」中止のお知らせ

さて、このたび、新型コロナウイルス（COVID-19）の感染が拡大している状況を鑑み、例年１月に開催しております「新年パーティ」の開催中止を決定いたしました。
協会といたしましても、皆様にお会いできることを期待しながら開催を調整して参りましたが、引き続き全国的に警戒が必要な状況に変わりなく、誠に残念ではございますが、今回の判断とさせていただきました。楽しみにしてくださっていた皆様には、深くお詫び申し上げます。尚、今後のイベントに関しましても、情勢を鑑みながら随時ホームページにてご報告申し上げます。皆様のご理解のほどよろしくお願い申し上げます。

Cancellation of New Year’s Reception
We hope this letter finds you well. Thank you very much for your continued support of JASO.
Now, the number of Covid-19 infected people is increasing again and we decided to cancel “New Year’s Reception” which we hold in January every year.
We had kept preparing the party, hoping to gather members. However, we should be cautious about the pandemic situation continuously and we had to decide on cancellation.
As for other events, we will keep the information updated on JASO website, based on future situation.
We are sincerely sorry for the cancellation and thank everyone for your understanding and cooperation.

リチャード・メイ新総領事ご着任のお知らせ
大阪日米協会

拝啓 時下ますますご清祥の段、お慶び申し上げます。
平素は協会運営に際し、格別のご高配を賜り厚く御礼申し上げます。
この度、駐大阪・神戸米国総領事館に新たにリチャード・メイ総領事がご着任されました。
早速事務局にて、ご挨拶にお伺いいたしましたので皆様にご報告申し上げます。
リチャード・メイ総領事は、広報・文化交流を専門とする上級外交官で、多数の大使館に勤務のご経験があり、過去日本にも赴任されております。そして、47都道府県全てを訪れていらっしゃるということで、大変流暢な日本語を話される知日派です。大阪日米協会の活動にも興味を持っていただき、現在はコロナの影響で一時的に日米の往来が止まっておりますが、両国の懸け橋となり今後益々の日米の友好、親善の発展を強く願われており、当協会 会員の皆様ともお会いできる日を楽しみにされておりました。
事務局といたしましては、会員の皆様とメイ総領事、そして日米両国の更なる親睦の為に尽力してまいる所存ですので、今後とも皆様のご理解とご協力の程お願い申しあげます。

New Consul General, Mr. Richard Mei

We hope this message finds you well. Thank you very much for your continuous support of JASO.
Mr. Richard Mei assumed New Consul General in American Consulate General Osaka-Kobe in September. The other day, executive office members visited him for greeting.
Mr. Richard Mei is a senior diplomat who specializes in PR and cultural exchange. He has worked in many embassies and also worked in Japan. He has been to every 47 prefecture and speaks Japanese fluently.
Moreover, he is interested in JASO activities. Now, the US-Japan movement stops temporally, because of the pandemic Covid-19, but he wishes to be a mediator in the US-Japan relationship and is looking forward to gathering JASO members.
We would like to make efforts to develop more solid US-Japan friendship.
We appreciate for your understanding and cooperation.
